In Texas, Two state parks are a match made in heaven to visit with their proximity to each other, offering a unique opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. A bit off the main route off US 287, you will find Palo Duro Canyon and Caprock Canyons, both nestled in the Texas panhandle.
Palo Duro Canyon, known for its dramatic rock formations and vibrant colors, stretches over 120 miles and is the second-largest canyon in the United States, presenting a stunning backdrop for hiking, biking, and photography.
Caprock Canyon, an untamed wilderness of rugged canyons and vibrant biodiversity, boldly flaunts the breathtaking allure of the High Plains while serving as the proud sanctuary for the official Texas State Bison herd.

The parks are a pleasant detour to the otherwise long journey through the Texas panhandle, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in breathtaking views and abundant wildlife. Both parks deserve more attention, but the remote location seems to deter more visitors, leaving a hidden gem for those adventurous enough to explore this extraordinary part of Texas.
Palo Duro Caynon
Boasting the second largest canyon in the contiguous United States of America, Palo Duro provides the awe of its sheer size and depth, captivating visitors with its breathtaking landscapes and vibrant colors that change with the light of day. With road access into the canyon, you truly get a sense of the vast scale of the park surrounding you, where each twist and turn reveals new scenic vistas.
The main attraction is the famous lighthouse trail, which leads to a stunning stone spire overlooking the expansive canyon floor, offering unparalleled photo opportunities and a moment of reflection amidst nature.
Do this hike early though, as the canyon heats up quickly under the glaring sun with little to no shade to provide relief, making the early hours the ideal time to explore. Several roadside attractions and short hikes are scattered throughout the park, each telling its own unique story and adding to the overall experience. We visited in July, and after taking in the sights and sounds of this magnificent landscape, we finished our hikes by 12:00, feeling invigorated from the adventure.
Caprock Canyon
Caprock Canyon seems to be untouched, with bison roaming freely across the rugged terrain, while the stunning slot canyons reveal their intricate beauty. The great western desert views are unlimited, stretching far into the horizon, offering a sense of vastness that captivates the soul. As luck would have it, a summer storm rolled through unexpectedly, transforming the landscape. With the vast skyline in view, we stood in awe as we watched the rain and lightning approach from miles away, the dark clouds intensifying the colors of the canyon below. The canyon rim trails provide not only great views but also the opportunity for leisurely hikes through the fascinating rock formations and towering spires that seem to reach for the sky, creating a perfect backdrop for both adventure and reflection in this remarkable natural setting.
