A visit to the Vigili Del Fuoco and learn about firefighting in Venice Italy

The adaptation to the city’s unique challenges of water-based transportation makes this fire department unique.
About the Fire Watch
The dedicated personnel at the station operate specialized boats equipped to tackle fires and rescue operations on the water. This highlights the importance of prompt firefighting in Venice, Italy in this enchanting yet complex urban environment. The Vigili del Fuoco is more than just a firefighting facility; it symbolizes the resilience of Venice and its commitment to protecting both its residents and its timeless heritage.
The firefighter greeted us just like any other fire station I’ve come across in my travels. The hospitality of fellow firefighters from across the globe is universal. The staff showed us around and explained their strategies and tactics for firefighting and rescues in Venice.
Classic Italian Styling and Espresso
As you would expect from the Italians, the fire chief boat is a beautiful mid century Chris-Craft with a high gloss wood hull with posh leather seats and an espresso machine onboard. The standard fire boats are utilitarian in nature but maintain a high gloss showing pride in their equipment.

The station houses all the standard amenities but with some Italian flare. In the kitchen near the courtyard, a firefighter is making some drinks on a massive espresso machine. The firefighter/barista told us that he was assigned to the espresso machine for the day and to keep the rest of the staff caffeinated, a classic Italian concept. A repair shop in the back of the docking area is where maintenance is done.
The hospitality and warmth shown to us is never lost on us as we tour and learn more about firefighting in other parts of the world. I’m grateful for the profession and that it provides opportunities like this.
