Getting There
Tallinn (TLL), Riga (RIX), and Vilnius (VNO) Airports are your 3 major airports. We found a great deal on airfare to Helsinki (HEL) and took the ferry over to Tallinn in just 2 hours. This gave a full day in Helsinki as a bonus
The Baltic’s are also part of the Euro Schengen Area so border crossings are seamless. Train service is also an option. We rented a car for our trip to access more than just the city centers.
When to go
Fall
Typical with my travels, I wait until the shoulder season for breathtaking Fall foliage that graces late September and October. The days are be getting shorter, but those brisk temperatures are great for walks and indulging in cozy comfort foods like goulash that warm the soul.
Summer
“Coolcations” are stealing the spotlight in recent years, The temperate Summers here are an escape from the heat of popular travel destinations. The cities come alive as plants and trees burst into bloom, while festivals and events are held almost every weekend.
Estonia
Tallinn – Days 1-2
The UNESCO World Heritage capital city has a stunningly preserved center, enveloped by its ancient city walls. Tallinn has a modern tram system that whisks you away to the new center of the city or historic old city center. Vital transportation hubs like ferry, intercity train, airport make connecting to a breeze.

Spend a day lost in the vibrant city center and dive into the countless craft shops within the stout city walls. Textiles, pottery, and striking paintings are just the beginning of what awaits you. But don’t forget; the city walls themselves are a spectacle to behold. From the heights of observation towers to the serene allure of walled gardens, these ancient fortifications offer a peek into the city’s storied past.
Make it a non-negotiable stop at St. Oalaf’s Church where you can ascend the rotunda tower, you will get a panorama of the entire city 360 degrees of beauty.
The coffee culture here is not just strong; it’s fueled by a tech-savvy workforce that thrives in this city. Yet, surprisingly, it’s not just a sea of laptops and workspaces. The bakery scene is mind blowing, with pastries that demand to be devoured alongside your favorite caffeinated concoction.
Since my last trip, a Mikkeller tap room has burst onto the scene, adding to the allure. As I’ve discovered on my journeys, visiting a Mikkeller is an obsession for me. So, you bet I’m going back to check this one of the list.
Lahemaa National Park – Day 3
A short drive East of Tallinn unveils Estonia’s crown jewel: Lahemaa National Park. This stunning park sprawls along the Baltic Sea. Step beyond the mundane into wild treks and hikes through an intriguing terrain that will leave you breathless. Here, boggy wetlands collide with the fragrant edges of dense pine forests. Creating an audacious spectacle to be explored.
Among the piney woods is the Majakivi Pikanomme Observation Tower. An unexpected gem that invites you to scale its heights and gaze down at the park from above the treeline.
Venture near the coastlines and you’ll uncover what appears to be eerie, long abandoned Soviet barracks and outpost structures lurking by the shore. It’s a chilling spectacle, beckoning the brave to explore its haunting remnants.
Latvia
Riga – Days 4-5
The capital city of Latvia is nothing short of an irresistible gem, just a short drive South from Tallinn. It sprawls luxuriously along the banks of the Daugava River. The heart of the city is on the northern bank, where history and intrigue collide at every turn.
The real standout is the stunning architectural marvel that is the Latvijas Nacionālā Bibliotēka (National Library) located on the riverbank. This colossal library isn’t just an eye catching; its an extensive collection of Latvian literature and a observation deck that offers breathtaking views of the river and the city center. And don’t miss the Latvian War Museum. Free entry and adorned with a striking mural that features the family crests of eminent families. If you’re looking for a more artistic inspiration, the Latvian Photography Museum is a treasure trove waiting to be explored. All of this is conveniently located around the Pilsētas kanāl, making it a must visit.
The city is irresistible for those who crave leisurely strolls and the charm of historic architecture. Bastejkalna Park, hugs the banks of the Pilsētas canal right at the heart of Riga. Lush foliage that beckons you to unwind.
You can’t possibly claim to understand Latvian cuisine without going to Centrālais Gastro Tirgus. The ultimate food hall that’s simply blazing with flavors. For the beer lovers, the Labietis Brewery reigns supreme in this town. The main brewpub offers a cozy atmosphere that far surpasses the bustling food hall location.
Sigulda – Day 6
A day trip to the outdoor activity hub of Latvia is an absolute in the Fall. Sigulda, is nestled in a breathtaking river valley. Boasting a treasure trove of hiking and biking trails just begging to be conquered. We we rented bikes from the Okej bike shop. Diving headfirst into the gritty gravel paths winding through lush woods and along the majestic river valley. Need a break? Cozy fire pits scattered along the trails are a perfect excuse to take in the stunning Fall foliage.
Don’t skip the Turaida Muzejs, the nearby castle and museum that offers a captivating detour. When you’re chilled to your bones, the town’s rich soups and hearty goulash are just the warming embrace you need.
Lithuania
Vilnius – Days 7-8
The capital city is a vibrant hub, bustling with an increasing number of visitors each year. With its rich history and a cheeky sense of humor, Vilnius invites you to indulge in a few days of exploration. Perched along the Neris River valley, this European gem offers stunning vistas of the city that will awe. At Hill Park, the birch and oak leaves glow in electrifying yellow hues. Transforming the landscape into an irresistible photography playground just waiting for you to capture its beauty.
History buffs will be captivated by the grand churches and majestic castles that dominate the area, particularly Castle Gedimino. The enticing grounds surrounding the castle, the perfect backdrop for sipping on a hot beverage.
Two food halls make their mark in the city—Downtown Food Hall and Baltas Tiltas—offering a dizzying array of food choices. The heart and soul of Lithuanian food, head straight to Hales Market. This historic food market isn’t just a place to shop; it’s a treasure trove of local produce and traditional dishes crafted by the mothers and grandmothers of Lithuania. Goulash and soups here aren’t just meals—they’re a culinary experience you simply can’t ignore!
Uzupis
Uzupis is the bohemian neighborhood in Vilnius. Claiming it is an autonomous area (for fun) with its own passport stamp. The artsy, cafe neighborhood is great for strolling and finding local art and trinkets. The street art and graffiti among some of the vacant builds is a fun exploration of the area with great fun around every corner.
Side quest to Minsk, Belarus
Vilnius is also one of the few options to get into Belarus as well. As a side quest to this trip, we flew into Minsk from Vilnius. One of two ways into the country for non-Citizens. More on that trip here, Minsk, Belarus.
